(LESSON 9):-- How To Persuade Somebody To Do Something You Want

As you know, people are always interested in what they want. Take for instance a fisher man who is-- with the aim of catching more fishes as he is out there beside the river side for this game.

Does he go about baiting a piece of bread with the fishes? No! He tosses worms before the fishes because, he knows that worm are what the fishes needed. So, when he went fishing, he did not bait the hook with piece of bread or ice-cream, rather, he dangled a worm or a small frog in front of the fishes and say: would you not like to have that?

It is not what the fisher man wanted but what the fishes wanted. Is it not necessary to use same common sense when trying to persuade people do what you want?

So, it is necessary to bait the hook to suit the fish. Because, nobody is interested in what you want then, why talk about what you want? I believed it seem childish to do so.

Remember this, the rest of us are just like you: we are interested in what we want. Therefore, if you want to influence people on this earth, the only way to do that is to-- talk about what they want and equally show them how to get it.

Illustrating further with this, assuming you do not want your child to smoke, it is advisable you do not talk about what you want rather show him/her how cigarettes may keep them from performing well in that game of physical activities he or she is always interested in.

This brief story will clear your mind on this for proper understanding:
A writer and his son were trying to get a goat into the barn. Unfortunately for them, they made the mistake of thinking only of what they wanted. (This is taking the goat in the barn)

The writer and his son pushed and pulled, but the goat was just pulling and pushing equally as they were doing. The goat was thinking only of what he wanted; so he stiffened his legs and stubbornly refused to leave the environment in which he stands.

The housemaid who neither is a writer nor educated saw their predicaments because, she had more about this kind of sense than the writer and his son. Immediately, she thought of what the goat wanted; she quickly put her maternal finger inside the mouth of the goat and let the goat suck her finger as she gently led the goat inside the barn.

You see! Every act ever performed by you since you were born was performed because you wanted something. If am not mistaking, how about the time you gave a large contribution to that your organization or church? (It is no exception) yes! You gave this large sum because you wanted to do so from the depth of your heart and you wanted to lend a helping hand right! This act was done out of unselfish and divine act.

Let us assume you had not wanted that feeling more than you wanted your money, would you have make that contribution? Of course, you made the contribution because you wanted something, and that thing is the feeling of satisfaction involved.

Closing this article with the word of Harry A. Overstreeet: “action spring out of what we fundamentally desired ___ and the best piece of advice which can be given to would be persuaders, whether in business, in your career or talent pursuit, in the school, in politics is first: arouse in the other person an eager want. He who can do this has the whole world with him. He who cannot walks a lonely way.
