(LESSON 8):-- Successful People Are Not Always Talented, Why Is Talent Alone Not Enough?

Score image

According to Edouard Pailleron, a French poet and dramatist he said and I quote: “have success and there will always be fools to say that you have talent.” From his statement, we can observe that-- talent is often overrated and equally misunderstood all the time.

That is why when people achieve great things, people always explain their accomplishments by attributing it to talent. Then, why do we know highly talented people who are not successful if talent is enough?

This particular issue is a misleading guide to many business leaders who go ahead thinking that, talent is the answer to every problem. That is why many companies and consultants stretch themselves in recruiting people they assumed with talents ahead of everything else.

Some companies go ahead to hire PhD holders from top universities, promote them quickly and equally reward them lavishly and forget to accurately assess their performance.

According to Peter Drucker, the father of modern management, talent is never enough he said, and went ahead to narrate it as follows: “ there seem to be little correlation between a man and the effectiveness of his intelligence, his imagination or his knowledge … so intelligence, imagination and knowledge are essential resources, but only effectiveness convert them into results.”

To resonate with what he is saying, if talent were enough, why is it that the most effective and influential people are not always the talented ones? By considering these aggregates below, you will understand with me that, that is not always the case:
… More or greater percentage of all CEOs of over 500 companies had C or average in University.
… More than 50 percent of millionaire entrepreneur never finished schooling.

This will illustrate clearly that talent is never enough or not everything.
To prove to you my humble reader that this article is not an anti-talent write-up, Let us use the principle of HIGH JUMP. This is a wonderful simple illustration of the importance of talent. (Sports like the HIGH JUMP)

To win the HIGH JUMP sports requires one person who can at least jump seven feet high, not really seven people who can jump one foot high. This example may seem obvious because, we always believe we can achieve much by throwing more people at a task.

Remember, that is not always the right solution. In fact, many task calls for talent more than numbers. Like the case scenario we are talking about, it requires the extraordinary talent coming out of one person, not really the mediocre talent of many individuals.

But remember that the toughest thing about success is that you get to keep on being a success, know that talent is only a starting point in business or career job. You have to keep working that talent.

So, talent is cheaper than table salt according to Stephen King. Therefore, what separates the talented individual from the successful one is clearly a lot of hard work. More than just what you have as your talent is needed for anybody to be that successful.
